language HELP PLEASE!! EFFECTIVE LISTENING?

April 26th, 2009
audi asked:

Listen to a political speech, news commentary, public service announcement, or a commercial. Write a paper of two to three well-developed paragraphs evaluating the message. Be sure to mention main ideas and supporting details. Also refer to the questions to decide if this information is based on fact, colored by emotion, influenced by the person presenting this information, and in agreement with your values.

Look for the logical development of ideas based on the information gathered from listening to the program. Ask yourself these questions as you take notes:

1. What is the opening sentence about? It may be the topic sentence or main idea.
2. What is the last sentence about? Is it a restatement of the main idea?
3. What important points are being made about the main idea?
4. Are there important subtopics that need to be remembered?
5. What key words (remember, most of all, listen) does the speaker use to tell you what he is about to say is important?
6. How does the speaker’s appearance affect the message?
7. How does the speaker use his or her voice to emphasize points? Listen for tone and volume.
8. Does the speaker repeat a phrase a number of times?
9. What visual aids did the speaker use?
10. Was the purpose of the speech to inform, persuade, entertain? What evidence supports this as the writer’s purpose?
